First Prize for Round Wood at Heathfield Show!

20 June 2017 in Home & Garden Features | Oak & Decking Products | Oak Framed Buildings

We had a fantastic day at the Heathfield Show 2017 in East Sussex and we were extremely proud to win First Prize for Best Trade Stand 2017.

Our stand measured 12 x 18m so there was plenty of room to show the full range of products Round Wood has on offer! We were able to discuss a wide range of products whether it was customers looking for a small item to complement their garden or people looking into home makeovers on a large scale.

Our Timber team were on the stand ready to discuss decking, flooring and cladding projects with a wide range of sample materials on hand to illustrate the quality of material used.

Garden Features were plentiful with cast iron statues, planters, water features and an impressive selection of burners!

For the buildings side of the business we were able to have a full two bay garage within our stand!

It took two days for our team to build on site but it was more than worth it to be able to show the quality of our work to the visiting public. The building got a lot of interest and was auctioned off on the day!

We were also pleased to use the day to debut a new and exciting product, the Pleached Tree Table.

This impressive item features a large planter made from 3mm thick corten steel, inside is planted a pleached tree and around the tree is a bespoke oak table top.

We had both a square and cylinder on display with a London Plain and Wisteria tree. We paired these with oak sleeper benches and squinted plinths to show how well this item works for outdoor entertaining. If you can see this unique piece of exterior design within your own garden contact our team to discuss the options.

It is not often we are able to show all areas of our business at one show so it was a great day for the team and we are all excited for the projects we will be involved in this Summer as a result of conversations had on the day!

To discuss any of the items and/or services we offer contact our team on sales@roundwood.com or call 01435 867 072 where our team will be more than happy to assist you.

A Guide To Planters

30 March 2017 in Home & Garden Features

When decorating your home plant pots are often an afterthought, but choosing the right planters can set the theme of your property by either subtly complementing its features or even creating a striking focal point. In recent years the search for garden planters has become more and more complex, gone are the days of a quick trip to a garden centre with one or two choices available. The planter market is saturated and consumers are bombarded with a huge choice of materials and finishes.

We offer a wide variety of materials and the sales team are more than happy to guide customers through the available options. From rustic planters suited to character properties to sleek and contemporary styles for the more modern home, customers can find the perfect planter for that finishing touch to any outdoor space at Round Wood of Mayfield.

Terracino

Terracino is fired in high-powered gas kilns to a much higher temperature than standard Terracotta, and as a result boasts frost resistance up to -40 °C. The hand finished range has a warm, natural feel and is available in a wide range of designs and sizes which range from 10-100cm in diameter. This classic Tuscan look lends itself well to the majority of properties and the updated manufacturing techniques also make it a reliable option. Its durable credentials, versatility and timeless look make it a popular choice amongst customers.

Clayfibre

These eco-friendly faux lead planters have a traditional and authentic look yet represent excellent value for money. Manufactured from recycled materials, Clayfibre production requires only 10% of the energy used for ceramic and plastic equivalents.  The planters are lightweight enough to be easily moved before planting and will weather gently and realistically resulting in an attractive faux-lead patina. The range includes boxes, troughs and cylinders in a range of designs with the most popular being the classic Georgian panelled Chelsea Design.

Corten Steel

Due to its endless life span and extraordinary strength Corten Steel’s original use was re-inforcing bridges. Starting out as a blue steel, as soon as it’s exposed to the elements it will naturally weather and develop a rich eye catching finish. The rust provides a protective seal making these planters virtually indestructible. The warm industrial feel is very on trend at the moment, and Corten Steel was a prominent feature in an award winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show this year. Round Woods Corten Steel is hand crafted in Europe and is available in boxes, cylinders and troughs, with bespoke sizes also available.

Fibreglass

Fibreglass is a popular choice for consumers wanting a high quality contemporary look in a lightweight material. Durable, frost resistant and easy to wipe clean this planter is ideal for internal or external use. Round Wood’s Fibreglass is available in a range of colours and, rather than being painted, the colour is added during the formation of the raw fibreglass, this manufacturing process means that the planter will keep its colour even if knocked or scuffed. To add further reliability it has also been reinforced at the corners. This range is available in boxes, cylinders and troughs in an extremely wide range of sizes including large statement pieces.

Planter Tips

·     -  For a roof terrace or a balcony Fibrestone or Fibreglass are the perfect lightweight option.

·     -  Clayfibre is ideal for customers wanting an eco-friendly container.

·     -  If your planter will be exposed to strong winds a non-tapered shape will be the least likely to blow over.

·     -  If you’re concerned about frost Terracino, Fibreglass and Ironstone all have very good frost resistant properties.

In addition to planters, we offer decking, oak framed buildings, oak and walnut flooring, joinery, beams and sleepers and garden statues

Box Clever

24 January 2017 in Home & Garden Features

Allister Dempster of Sandstone Design recently used our Clayfibre Chelsea Box planters to great effect in a local garden design project.

Clayfibre Chelsea Boxes

Allister Dempster, a well-respected landscape gardener based out of Crowborough, has been a valued customer of Round Wood for several years. Whilst he most frequently installs our hardwood decking products, he keeps appraised of our full range so got in touch when he needed statement planters to frame a set of steps he had created for a client.

He plumped for Clayfibre Chelsea boxes as their stylish and authentic lead appearance best complemented the sandstone property.

The classic cubes provide an attractive symmetry in this space and are staggered, which creates a softer and more natural look than a balustrade would provide.

Clayfibre faux lead planters are not only attractive but also eco-friendly. They are made from recycled materials and the manufacturing process requires only 10% of the energy used for ceramic and plastic equivalents.  They are also lightweight and will weather beautifully, emitting salts to develop an attractive, misty, faux-lead patina.

The Clayfibre range is available in several designs in boxes, troughs and cylinders.

If you think these planters may be suitable for a project you are working on, you may be interested to know that our 55cm Chelsea Boxes are currently on offer at £95 (reduced from £112).

Winter Warmers

21 October 2016 in Home & Garden Features

As our range of steel and iron firepits has rapidly expanded over the last couple of years, you may find this quick purchasing guide useful.

The increased popularity of firepits seems to be the result of a permanent shift in tastes, rather than the typical short lived garden trend. Their eye-catching nature, particularly when used as a centre piece at parties, ease of use and outstanding durability means they look set to remain a long-term, staple feature.

Demand has also been driven by innovation. The introduction of new materials combined with evolving design themes makes it possible to find a model to suit any garden.

The majority of firepits on the market echo those first used by our ancestors. Typically, they are cast or wrought in iron into a bowl shape that helps the burning process. Generally they are one piece, but can consist of several smaller panels. As many are supplied with a grill, they are not just suited for generating warmth and burning garden waste, but also cooking.

Recently, steel models have also become more frequently available given the different aesthetic they provide, especially Corten variants

Corten steel was originally developed to provide outstanding strength and durability for bridge building and skyscraper construction. This was achieved by combining a precise amount of base materials and maintaining a high carbon content, which helps ensure unique weathering characteristics.

Corten rusts in the eye-catching, uniform finish often found on a variety of high end features, including planters and sculptures, such as the Angel of the North. This finish, which requires no treatment, protects the blue steel underneath, giving Corten a much longer lifespan than its mild steel counterparts.

Available Materials

Corten Steel:

High grade steel that forms a highly sought after, uniform rust finish. Medium weight, outstanding durability. Available in 60cm, 80cm, 1m, 1.2m & 1.5m

Mild Steel:

Standard grade steel that will patina in a random fashion. Typically a lower gauge than Corten steel, but still capable of providing years of use. Available in 60cm, 80cm, 1m & 1.2m. Also available with trivets.

Cast Iron:

Traditional burner material, often finished with a black matt powder coating that patinas over time. Can form rust spots. Extremely heavy duty; most weighty material. Available in 80cm.
