ÖÖD House Launch At ‘The Landscape Show’

17 September 2018 in Home & Garden Features | Oak & Decking Products | Oak Framed Buildings

Find us exhibiting at stand CP36 at The Landscape Show, where our new, state-of-the-art ÖÖD house is making its UK debut.

Developed by Estonian company ÖÖD- and now exclusively distributed and assembled by ourselves in the UK - the 18/m2 mini dwelling was originally envisaged as a pop-up hotel room or Airbnb pad but can also be used as an office, den or even yoga space.

The first ÖÖD house in the UK, available to purchase for £55,000 plus VAT, is currently in situ at Lime Cross Nursery in East Sussex for potential customers to view, or even stay in before purchasing.

The stunning, mirrored buildings which feature a steel frame, insulated glass and thermally treated wood are already proving popular with clients. The standard interior offers a studio layout with a kitchenette and bathroom as well as heated floors and LED lighting.

Established as one of the UK’s leading industry events, The Landscape Show, which runs from Tuesday 18th to Wednesday 19th September in London, attracts garden designers, landscaping professionals, architects, and interior designers from around the world.

Also exhibiting alongside us is our sister company The Pot Company, a leading wholesaler to the garden industry. Not only does it have over 30 years of experience in supplying garden industry professionals, it boasts over 30 ranges of planters in its vast collection and 150,000 pots at its warehouse in the Kent countryside.

We will also be showcasing our new range of thermo-treated decking and cladding at the show. Thermotreated.co.uk is a new division of our company which distributes Thermory® products throughout the UK.

The Thermory® range consists of decking boards, cladding, flooring, shingles and bathroom tiles, all of which have been heated and steamed at temperatures of up to 215°C in computer-controlled kilns. This process toughens the timber, ensures a low moisture content and develops a dark, luxurious colour, resulting in an attractive board that is extremely stable, even when cut from softwoods. Crucially, Thermory® also boast outstanding environmental credentials; their processes are entirely chemical free and are only applied to responsibly harvested raw materials.

Director Jason Frost who will be attending the Landscape Show said: “It’s always a great pleasure to exhibit here and this year we are really excited to have some really innovative and interesting new products to showcase”.

Visit us on stand CP36 at the Landscape Show to check our new products or for any further information, head to www.roundwood.com.

The “ÖÖD” House Summer Launch

1 August 2018 in Oak Framed Buildings

A Summer party hosted by ourselves celebrated the addition

of a new stunning, mirrored building to our collection.

Providing a striking backdrop to the event, the glass-fronted ‘ÖÖD’ house  wowed our VIP guests, clients and staff as they enjoyed an evening of wine and canapés at Lime Cross Nursery in Herstmonceux. Exclusive paintings and sculptures were also on display as potential customers viewed the impressive ÖÖD house for the first time.

Developed by Estonian company ÖÖD- and now exclusively distributed and assembled by ourselves in the UK - the 18/m2 mini dwelling was originally envisaged by its creators as a pop-up hotel room, Airbnb pad or standalone guest accommodation for homeowners.

But keen buyers have already been using them in a number of creative ways from offices to teenage dens to yoga spaces.

The first ÖÖD house in the UK will now remain in situ at Lime Cross Nursery for potential customers to view, or even stay in before purchasing.

The buildings feature a steel frame, insulated glass and thermally treated wood. The standard interior offers a studio layout with a kitchenette and bathroom.

Typically ÖÖD houses are hooked up to water, sewage, and electricity supply, but off-grid capabilities are under development. The houses are now available to purchase for £55,000 plus VAT, with a limited supply for the first few months.

Managing Director Zac Soudain said:

“We are really excited to add ÖÖD Houses to our collection as their only UK distributor and perhaps unsurprisingly they’ve already proved very popular.

“It was clear at the launch that these glass-fronted houses really have the wow factor and could be used for many purposes from pop-up accommodation to garden rooms to offices… they were generating a lot of excitement.

“They blend beautifully into any setting courtesy of the insulated glazing that covers the front and side while the rear elevation features eco-friendly thermo treated ash cladding, which also cleverly conceals a service void.

“Where they really come into their own is in a rural or natural landscape such as where our example ÖÖD house can be viewed at Lime Cross Nursery – it has been kept there since the launch potential customers can try before they buy.”

Marketing material for The ÖÖD House is currently still being developed and will be available very soon. For any further information please contact the team on 01435 860 260 or send an email to sales@roundwood.com

Winning Stand at BBC Gardeners World Live

1 August 2018 in Home & Garden Features | Oak & Decking Products | Oak Framed Buildings

Our decking, cladding, oak framed structures and planters featured on a winning stand at BBC Gardeners World Live.

We recently helped one of our regular customers triumph

in the “People’s Choice Award” at BBC Gardeners World Live.

After providing several striking elements for Conquest Creative’s garden, it was voted by visitors as most popular in show.

Entitled “Across The Board,” the stand was presented as an example of an ideal outside space for a professional, retired couple with grandchildren. It also claimed a silver gilt award for show judges.

Conquest had the helping hands of our team in giving the stand a contemporary edge with eco-friendly thermo treated cladding and decking, as well as supplying a striking oak pergola and children’s swing from our oak framed building workshop.

The garden, which won for its creativity whilst being “easy to maintain”, making it ideal for its intended client, also impressed with our corten steel planters, a contemporary choice thanks to its deep orange, weathered appearance.

The multi-functional, low maintenance garden space “ideally suited to a professional couple who’ve embarked upon early retirement with grown-up children that have fledged the family nest” also included an outdoor kitchen, boardwalk and lawn.

Other highlights included “elements for all seasons” with granite stepping-stones across the grassed lawn with a reflection pool and a corner sunken seated fire pit.

Ross Conquest of Conquest Creative Spaces said of Round Wood and its help in winning the BBC “People’s Choice” garden last month: “Round Wood is a landscaper's hidden gem for creating something a little special in the garden.

“Their ranges of tropical hardwoods, oak and Thermory timbers has allowed us to be more creative with our designs and suit different client budgets and expectations. The Thermory range [which was used in the BBC Gardeners World Live garden] with its special clip system is great.

“Round Wood are a combination of importers and skilled joiners, with a keen eye for garden life-styling. A great combination for top service and expertise, can't fault their service over the years and they always deliver with impeccable reaction times, cheers guys!”

First Prize for Round Wood at Heathfield Show!

20 June 2017 in Home & Garden Features | Oak & Decking Products | Oak Framed Buildings

We had a fantastic day at the Heathfield Show 2017 in East Sussex and we were extremely proud to win First Prize for Best Trade Stand 2017.

Our stand measured 12 x 18m so there was plenty of room to show the full range of products Round Wood has on offer! We were able to discuss a wide range of products whether it was customers looking for a small item to complement their garden or people looking into home makeovers on a large scale.

Our Timber team were on the stand ready to discuss decking, flooring and cladding projects with a wide range of sample materials on hand to illustrate the quality of material used.

Garden Features were plentiful with cast iron statues, planters, water features and an impressive selection of burners!

For the buildings side of the business we were able to have a full two bay garage within our stand!

It took two days for our team to build on site but it was more than worth it to be able to show the quality of our work to the visiting public. The building got a lot of interest and was auctioned off on the day!

We were also pleased to use the day to debut a new and exciting product, the Pleached Tree Table.

This impressive item features a large planter made from 3mm thick corten steel, inside is planted a pleached tree and around the tree is a bespoke oak table top.

We had both a square and cylinder on display with a London Plain and Wisteria tree. We paired these with oak sleeper benches and squinted plinths to show how well this item works for outdoor entertaining. If you can see this unique piece of exterior design within your own garden contact our team to discuss the options.

It is not often we are able to show all areas of our business at one show so it was a great day for the team and we are all excited for the projects we will be involved in this Summer as a result of conversations had on the day!

To discuss any of the items and/or services we offer contact our team on sales@roundwood.com or call 01435 867 072 where our team will be more than happy to assist you.

Case Study: Extension

24 January 2017 in Oak Framed Buildings

We take a close look at a stunning, fully glazed oak framed extension that our buildings team recently completed on behalf of a local client.

When a local client approached us recently to assist with extending his substantial detached dwelling, we jumped at the opportunity. The property, which boasted exposed timber features and joinery supplied by our workshop, appeared particularly suited to an extension constructed from an oak frame, our speciality.

The initial remit was clear; the homeowner wanted naturally lit, additional ground floor space for a new kitchen and dining area, with a floor above for a bathroom and storage areas. Our team then advised on the most practical and attractive way this could be achieved.

The initial step was a visit by our site surveyor. During an extensive consultation, the client’s needs were more thoroughly assessed and possible design themes discussed. Sketches were then drawn up and revisions suggested and acted upon.

The result was an outline proposal for an oak framed extension featuring direct glazing, exposed oak beams and a gable roof profile (as this best complemented the house). Once finer details had been agreed, CAD drawings were produced and signed off, before frame manufacture began in our workshop, using traditional crafting techniques.

As with approximately half of our projects, we carried out the fitting of the frame. The size of the oak beams used in construction and the large amount of glass involved necessitated extensive planning and attention to detail on site, but this was fully justified by the stunning final result.

TOTW: Oak Framed Buildings

1 November 2016 in Oak Framed Buildings

In the latest of our columns for the Times of Tunbridge Wells, we take a look at the process of purchasing an oak framed building.

Oak Frames Simplified

The prospect of purchasing an Oak Framed Building can be daunting, particularly if you have limited experience of construction projects.  If you are a first timer, we suggest viewing the process as a series of stages that can be managed to a level you feel comfortable with. A good supplier will value any input you wish to give, but should be equally happy to oversee the entire process.

Obtaining a quote

The enquiry process will be far easier if you have a good idea of the type and style of building you require.  Your first point of contact with a supplier should be to request any brochures they have. Along with their website and magazines, these are a rich source of inspiration.

During your research it is also well worth ascertaining if a ‘kit’ building can meet your requirements as they can represent great value. We supply 47 variations of standard garages, covering one to four bays.

You may, however, have specific needs and therefore require a bespoke design. Whichever path you take; several decisions will need to be made regarding the size and roof profile of your building. It is also worth considering at an early stage if you require joinery and living areas, which may have planning implications.

The actual build process can be broken down into three stages: groundwork, frame assembly and roofing. The supplier of your oak frame will have in-house teams for each.  Whilst it is possible for you to source your own contractors - which can prove more cost effective if they are nearby - this is only recommended if you are prepared to manage the project to a high degree.

Planning

Before proceeding with any quote you will obviously need to meet all planning and building regulations in your area. Most established frame suppliers will be happy to guide you through the regulatory process and often employ dedicated staff members.  This tends to be the simplest option given their experience and contacts in the field and knowledge of the buildings their company supplies.

Going Ahead

If you decide to take the plunge after obtaining your quote and planning permission, the next stage involves signing off on plans. Unless you have supplied these via an architect, your oak framer should draw these up for your approval. A site visit may be required depending on the nature of the project, from which working sketches may also be drawn.

Construction

Watching your building go up is the fun part, especially if you have decided that your framer will manage all of the necessary teams! The first phase involves the groundworkers digging out the foundations, pouring the concrete slab and then laying the necessary brick work.

Then the assemblers move in. First, they will fit a soleplate to the brickwork. Some of the upright green oak posts are secured to this using steel pins, whilst those that stand independently rest on staddle stones. The eaves beam, tie beam, rafters and ridge complete the frame assembly.

Studwork and bracing is then fitted, on to which the external weatherboard is fastened. This can be supplied in either oak or softwood, depending on budget. Next the rafters are put in place, ready for the tiles to be fitted by your final team – the roofers.

Mushroom Staddle Stones

18 July 2016 in Home & Garden Features | Oak Framed Buildings

We are happy to introduce granite and sandstone mushroom staddle stones (pad stones) to our range. Originally, mushroom staddle stones were used to raise granaries, hayricks and game larders off the ground to stop vermin from getting to the stored stocks. The shape was designed specifically to feature the wide cap (mushroom) at the top as this would work as a barrier to minimise the possibility of vermin gaining access to the building above. These days however, the stones are also popular as garden features due to their attractive nature making them a feature in their own right.

Recently added to our current offering of straight or tapered stones, are granite and sandstone mushroom staddle stones (as pictures below).
