Durability & Weather Resistance

Corten steel is built for the outdoors. Once exposed to the elements, it develops a self-protecting rust layer that shields the steel beneath from corrosion. This makes each planter incredibly robust – able to withstand rain, frost, heat, and snow without losing its structural integrity.

Low Maintenance & Eco-Friendly

Unlike other materials that need repainting or sealing, corten steel looks after itself. Once the weathering process is complete, no further upkeep is required. It’s also fully recyclable and designed to last for decades, making it a smarter, more sustainable choice than disposable alternatives.

Unique, Evolving Aesthetic

Each planter starts out a deep steel blue and gradually transforms, over 3 to 9 months, into a rich, textured orange-brown patina. This timeworn finish adds warmth, depth and character – and no two planters ever weather quite the same. It’s a living material that changes with the seasons.

Corten steel is designed to be low-maintenance, but there are simple ways to preserve its look and longevity.

Once the rust patina has fully developed, you can seal it using a rust-inhibiting oil such as Owatrol Oil. This helps stabilise the surface, prevents further run-off, and deepens the warm colour of the patina. It’s a clear, penetrating finish that protects without changing the rustic appeal—though it will slightly darken the tone, giving it a ‘wet look’.

To apply, simply use a brush or sprayer and allow it to dry fully (usually within 12–48 hours depending on conditions). This step is optional but ideal if you’re placing planters near porous surfaces or want to lock in the finish.
