Why Choose Our Corten Steel Planters?
Durability & Weather Resistance
Corten steel is built for the outdoors. Once exposed to the elements, it develops a self-protecting rust layer that shields the steel beneath from corrosion. This makes each planter incredibly robust – able to withstand rain, frost, heat, and snow without losing its structural integrity.
Low Maintenance & Eco-Friendly
Unlike other materials that need repainting or sealing, corten steel looks after itself. Once the weathering process is complete, no further upkeep is required. It’s also fully recyclable and designed to last for decades, making it a smarter, more sustainable choice than disposable alternatives.
Unique, Evolving Aesthetic
Each planter starts out a deep steel blue and gradually transforms, over 3 to 9 months, into a rich, textured orange-brown patina. This timeworn finish adds warmth, depth and character – and no two planters ever weather quite the same. It’s a living material that changes with the seasons.

Browse Corten Planters by Style & Use
Not sure which planter suits your space? Our corten steel range includes a variety of shapes and sizes to help you find the right fit – whether you’re styling a small patio or reshaping an entire garden.
- Modern Geometrics: Choose cube and trough planters like the Rectan and Barium for a contemporary look that’s perfect against rendered walls or modern paving.
- Organic Rounds: Our round pots and cylinders – such as Cylindro and Oren – are ideal for focal planting, entrances, or dotting through borders.
- Statement Planters: The Pedes, Genus, and Unus planters bring sculptural form to your outdoor layout, doubling as eye-catching features as well as planting space.
- Boundary Builders: Trough-style planters like the Barium and Hones provide stylish structure, great for lining paths, zoning open spaces, or softening fence lines.

Understanding the Weathering Process
Corten steel weathers naturally through six stages, starting with a dark, oily coating and gradually moving into the rich rust finish it’s known for. This visual shift typically takes 3 to 9 months, depending on exposure to wind, rain, and sun.
During the early ‘run-off’ phase (stages 3–4), water may carry rust particles onto nearby surfaces, which can stain stone or concrete. To avoid this, we recommend raising your planter slightly or placing it on a protective base until the patina stabilises.
Once fully weathered (stages 5–6), your planter will have developed a self-sealing layer that’s both striking and protective, requiring no further treatment.
Care, Sealing & Maintenance Tips
Corten steel is designed to be low-maintenance, but there are simple ways to preserve its look and longevity.
Once the rust patina has fully developed, you can seal it using a rust-inhibiting oil such as Owatrol Oil. This helps stabilise the surface, prevents further run-off, and deepens the warm colour of the patina. It’s a clear, penetrating finish that protects without changing the rustic appeal—though it will slightly darken the tone, giving it a ‘wet look’.
To apply, simply use a brush or sprayer and allow it to dry fully (usually within 12–48 hours depending on conditions). This step is optional but ideal if you’re placing planters near porous surfaces or want to lock in the finish.
