New Oak Barrel Stock

26 June 2013

We have recently replenished our stock of high end french oak wine barrels, which are perfect for use as water butts, ornaments and pub/restaurant furniture.

The current batch is particulalry clean and features varied finishing touches, such as vineyard markings, willow straps, red daubing and supporting braces.

Oak Wine Barrels Oak Wine Barrels

In order to maintain quality, a typical French wine barrel can only be used for about five seasons. Some vineyards even restrict them to just one vintage, which is the case for the ones we use. Decommissioned models are suitable for a number of new purposes given the standards they are coopered to.

We have established a consistent, high end supply of these, facilitated by our long standing contacts in the timber business in the region. They are sourced from a variety of top vineyards, including Chateau Beychevelle in the Medoc region.

Many carry distinctive markings and feature a number of differing finishing touches. Our customers put them to good use in a number of ways.

Rain water harvesting

Oak barrels make great water butts, particularly when compared alongside the green plastic models widely available. They are also kind to the environment and can offer storage capacities of 225 litres, allowing you to save on utility bills and avoid hose pipe bans.

Round Wood can carry out all the work required to convert a barrel. This involves drilling a hole for the down pipe and outlet and supplying a wooden tap. If required, diverter kits can then be fitted by the end user if they are concerned about over flow.

Planters

Not only do oak wine barrels look great in the garden as stand-alone features or tables, they also work brilliantly as planters.  Half barrels are best suited to this purpose and can also be used to harvest rain water.

Furniture and storage

Pubs and restaurants regularly use untouched barrels as tables, or décor.  They are also often seen in delicatessens for display stands. Weathering often adds to their appeal, although they can be finished with Danish Oil if a consistent finish is needed.  We even offer barrels with  table tops that slot straight onto full and half barrels, depending on the size of feature you need.

Fibrestone planter range expands!

16 August 2012

Our range of Fibrestone planters now includes a Mega (120cm) Faux Lead Chelsea box capable of holding several members of the Round Wood team, (photographic evidence provided).

Mega Fibrestone Planter      Giant Fibrestone

Previously, our largest Fibrestone Chelsea planter spanned a not insignificant 60 x 60 x 60cm, making it suitable for medium to large shrubs and trees. When one of our customers approached us with a bespoke requirement for a larger proposition, however, we were happy to oblige.

We are now happy to offer the new model (1.2m x 1m x 1m) as part of our standard range, along with an only relatively smaller 90cm x 90cm x 90cm Giant Chelsea Fibrestone Box. Other sizes are under development.

Fibrestone is an innovative composite, combining fibreglass with stone. So whilst it offers all the durability benefits of fibreglass, it still retains a solid feel. Unlike Fibreclay it will not weather or easily chip.

These new larger models have reinforced walls, so are suitable for large volumes of soil and large plants, such as palm trees. We hope to bring you photos of the boxes in situ shortly.
