New Oak Barrel Stock

26 June 2013

We have recently replenished our stock of high end french oak wine barrels, which are perfect for use as water butts, ornaments and pub/restaurant furniture.

The current batch is particulalry clean and features varied finishing touches, such as vineyard markings, willow straps, red daubing and supporting braces.

Oak Wine Barrels Oak Wine Barrels

In order to maintain quality, a typical French wine barrel can only be used for about five seasons. Some vineyards even restrict them to just one vintage, which is the case for the ones we use. Decommissioned models are suitable for a number of new purposes given the standards they are coopered to.

We have established a consistent, high end supply of these, facilitated by our long standing contacts in the timber business in the region. They are sourced from a variety of top vineyards, including Chateau Beychevelle in the Medoc region.

Many carry distinctive markings and feature a number of differing finishing touches. Our customers put them to good use in a number of ways.

Rain water harvesting

Oak barrels make great water butts, particularly when compared alongside the green plastic models widely available. They are also kind to the environment and can offer storage capacities of 225 litres, allowing you to save on utility bills and avoid hose pipe bans.

Round Wood can carry out all the work required to convert a barrel. This involves drilling a hole for the down pipe and outlet and supplying a wooden tap. If required, diverter kits can then be fitted by the end user if they are concerned about over flow.

Not only do oak wine barrels look great in the garden as stand-alone features or tables, they also work brilliantly as planters.  Half barrels are best suited to this purpose and can also be used to harvest rain water.

Furniture and storage

Pubs and restaurants regularly use untouched barrels as tables, or décor.  They are also often seen in delicatessens for display stands. Weathering often adds to their appeal, although they can be finished with Danish Oil if a consistent finish is needed.  We even offer barrels with  table tops that slot straight onto full and half barrels, depending on the size of feature you need.

Round Wood Wins Best in Show

15 June 2013

Round Wood of Mayfield beat off strong competition from over 120 other stallholders to land the prize for the best non-agricultural stand at this year’s Heathfield show.

Despite torrential rain during the set up phase, an impressive display was achieved. Whilst it showcased their full range of products - including flooring, decking, oak framed buildings and joinery – it was the selection of Home & Garden features on offer that really caught the eye.

First and foremost were two full size cast iron horse statues, indistinguishable to some from their real life counterparts in the parade ring. One even featured a saddle and a Round Wood branded Numnah and proved a popular photo point for visitors.

The Heathfield Show is the second largest country fair in the South of England and is attended by around 7000 people annually. Round Wood exhibits at several trade fairs throughout the country.

Criteria for judging at the Heathfield show was attractiveness and interest to the public and creative and effective use of stand layout.  Round Wood had previously won the best stand prize in 2009 and also a number of second places.

New Garden Furniture

22 January 2013

Our sister company Round Wood Trading has introduced the Castle range of wrought iron garden furniture to its selection of Home & Garden Features.

The Castle Range combines traditional design themes with contemporary colours and styling to achieve a range of garden furniture that suits any setting.

The furniture is classically crafted in wrought iron to the highest standards, yet remains affordable.

It currently comprises the 5-piece Canterbury Dining Set, the 3-piece Berkeley Bistro Set and the Wilton Bench. All are available in either a gloss white or Chartreuse green finish.

Every item in the Castle range folds down easily for storage, so is also suitable for small balconies, terraces or gardens were space is tight. The finish is weather resistant, so will allow a patina to develop gently.

Stay Warm This Christmas

If you're a homeowner with a wood burner keeping you warm this winter, make sure you consider installing a stove fan. These clever devices, priced at £61.50, sit on top of the burner and circulate the hot air it generates directly into the surrounding living space.

Stove Fan

This not only cuts costs but also reduces the impact of burning fuel on the environment, particulalry as they generate their own power, so require no electricity.

As the heat of the stove increases, do does the temperature differential in the fans thermoelectric module which generates the power required, meaning the fan turns increasingly fasters. A stoves output can be increased by up to 14%.

Movember Boys Raise Thousands!

30 November 2012

The Christmas spirit has come early to Round Wood! Customers, suppliers and friends have rallied to our ‘Movember’ cause, donating in excess of £3,000.

12 of the boys on the staff started the month clean shaven with the hope of raising £1,000 for the charities supported by the annual event, including Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research.

With the support of their ‘Mo Sistas’ they have already achieved triple that target and pledges are still coming in. Round Wood easily ranks inside the top 300 teams inside the country, out of well over 30,000. A final total of between £4,000 and £5,000 is hoped for, along with a top 150 spot.

Donations have come in from a variety of amazing sources and from all corners of the globe. Various suppliers from China, France, Germany and the UK have chipped in, alongside customers from across the continent. Other sponsors include local MP Charles Hendry and of course many friends and family members.

“The reaction to this month has been unbelievable,” said MD Zac Soudain, who won the ‘Man of Movember’ award after collecting the most sponsorship. “Everybody around us really rallied to our cause; I really cannot thank them enough.”

Commenting on his impressive ‘Trucker’; style moustache, he added: ‘It is really itchy. I cannot wait to get it off; I am looking forward to getting my face back. But it has all definitely been worth it. I am sure we will take part again next year with the aim of raising even more funds.”

Other moustache styles on display at Round Wood included ‘The Mexican’ and ‘The Major,’ as well as one dyed purple.

General Manger Trevor Stratford performed a ‘Reverse Movember.’ He has sported a moustache for 32 years, but maintained a completely hairless top lip for the month.

Round Wood of Mayfield supply a variety of products from their main base on Newick Lane, including oak framed buildings, hardwood decking and oak flooring. Their sister company Round Wood Trading offers a range of home and garden features, including giant replica Easter Island Heads which also ended up with a hairy top lip!

Fibrestone planter range expands!

16 August 2012

Our range of Fibrestone planters now includes a Mega (120cm) Faux Lead Chelsea box capable of holding several members of the Round Wood team, (photographic evidence provided).

Mega Fibrestone Planter      Giant Fibrestone

Previously, our largest Fibrestone Chelsea planter spanned a not insignificant 60 x 60 x 60cm, making it suitable for medium to large shrubs and trees. When one of our customers approached us with a bespoke requirement for a larger proposition, however, we were happy to oblige.

We are now happy to offer the new model (1.2m x 1m x 1m) as part of our standard range, along with an only relatively smaller 90cm x 90cm x 90cm Giant Chelsea Fibrestone Box. Other sizes are under development.

Fibrestone is an innovative composite, combining fibreglass with stone. So whilst it offers all the durability benefits of fibreglass, it still retains a solid feel. Unlike Fibreclay it will not weather or easily chip.

These new larger models have reinforced walls, so are suitable for large volumes of soil and large plants, such as palm trees. We hope to bring you photos of the boxes in situ shortly.

New Garden Statues Available

6 January 2012

Contrary to popular belief, not all of the garden statues in our range of Home & Garden Features are cast in iron. Whilst this was the medium we first favoured, we have recently introduced statues crafted in a range of other materials, including an innovative concrete/fibreglass composite.

This composite has allowed us to develop a range of giant statues that can be handled relatively simply, whilst still retaining a solid, heavy feel. Subjects included Easter Island Heads, which scale to over 2 metres, and life-size Terracotta Warriors.

Easter Island Statues

Other mediums include stone, limestone and high quality, weather resistant, resin. All are selected for their durability and ability to be hand crafted/finished. As such, our statues are not always the cheapest on the market, but are finished to a very high specification and will provide years of service.

Given its traditional roots and outstanding resistance to the elements, cast iron does remain a firm favourite. It also lends itself beautifully to classic designs such as our cast iron stag and gliding lady. That is not to say that it isn’t suitable for more contemporary themes. For evidence of this, just check out our cast iron Hippo, which is always a winner!

Fibrestone troughs now available

17 December 2011

We are now offering Chelsea Troughs cast in Fibrestone following the success of the boxes we introduced earlier this year. Fibrestone offers a harder wearing alternative to the Fibreclay models in our garden planter range.

Fibrestone Chelsea Troughs

Fibrestone is an ideal material for the manufacture of planters. It combines the durability of fibreglass, so is strong enough for use in giant models, with a solid, heavy feel, courtesy of the stone powder mixed into the composite

The result is an authentic, attractive planter that provides years of service at reasonable cost.

Unlike fibreclay, another popular medium we offer, fibrestone will not age greatly, so should be your choice of material if you would prefer your garden planter to maintain a consistent appearance.

Our Fibrestone Planter range also includes contemporary boxes and troughs in both white and black.

Full Fibrestone Range details:

Fibrestone Chelsea Troughs – Available Sizes: 50cm, 60cm, 70cm

Fibrestone Chelsea Boxes – Available Sizes: 30cm, 40cm, 50cm, 60cm

Black Fibrestone Contemporary Boxes – Available sizes: 30cm, 40cm, 50cm, 60cm, 75cm

Black Fibrestone Contemporary Troughs – Available sizes: 73cm, 88cm, 100cm

Solar light range expanded

12 October 2011

We are now able to offer a style of solar light to suit any garden or patio after taking on the full range available from our friends at ‘solar mates’.

Alongside their silver and copper classics are a host of new models, including the large ‘Tube’ and eye-catching ‘Sleek’ solar lights. All provide ambient, warm white LED lighting.

Tube Solar Light  Sleek Solar Light

All solar mates are made from stainless steel and feature an automatic dusk switch-on so that power is not wasted during daylight hours. The range is eco-friendly, CE certified and will continue to operate in even extreme temperatures.

In its simplest form, solar power can be described as the conversion of sunlight into electricity. This can be achieved through various methods, but photovoltaic is by far the most common, where power is converted and used directly, (with no intermittent processes).

Please note that as the available energy varies in relation to the amount of sunlight received, run times of all solar lamps will be reduced on overcast and dull days, particularly if positioned in areas of shade.

Tongariki at Hampton Court

26 July 2011

Our new style of 'Tongariki Easter Island Head' featured on a thematic show garden at Hampton Court Flower Shower recently.

The sculpture, which stands 1.5m tall, was a key feature of ‘A precious Warning,’ an exhibit that strongly emphasised the importance of sustainability. The stand was the brainchild of local garden designer Keri Mulqueen who worked in association with Plumpton College.

It proved extremely popular with both event organizers and the public; receiving a bronze award for design and being frequently used as a backdrop for photos.

“The Easter Island Statue really helped us to bring a dash of Easter Island authenticity to the garden,” said Mulqueen, MD of Hove based The Good Design Company. “It played a key part in conveying the message that we need to protect our natural resources and also really helped to draw people in.”

The garden was created to inform and educate the public about the effects of an unsustainable culture.  The story of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, provided an ideal backdrop to explore these issues against.

Easter Island Head Garden Statue

Easter Island experienced a collapse of its Eco- system, which led to the extinction of many of the islands prehistoric and indigenous species; events associated with the over exploitation of Easter Islands natural resources, particularly timber.

Many of the trees on the island are believed to have been felled and used as ‘rollers’ to transport the giant heads the population carved to commemorate their ancestors. When explorers from Europe, led by Roggeveen and Captain Cook, first discovered the Island in the 1500’s they were struck by its bleakness.

This was represented by the rear of the show garden which featured the Easter Island Statue, or Moai, set affront his native, barren landscape. Lush planting with a tropical influence surrounded this area, representing other islands living sustainably. A water irrigation feature within the planting made out of plastic represented how items can be re-cycled and re-used advantageously.

A ‘Tongariki’ Moai Statue was selected for the exhibit, a recent addition to our range of Easter Island Head Garden Statues. Other models we offer include the classic ‘Rano’ and ‘Louvre’ style Easter Islands Heads, which range in size from 30cm to a whopping 2.05 metres - the largest available anywhere in the world on a non-bespoke basis.
