Aftercare & Timber Behaviour

Green oak dries and hardens gradually over time, with the timber’s moisture content dropping from around 80% to 20% in the first few years. As this happens, you’ll see natural shrinkage, small splits, and movement in the frame, all part of the oak’s seasoning process and structural strengthening.

The timber will also begin to silver with exposure to sunlight, developing a soft grey patina. This can be delayed with UV-protective finishes if preferred. You may notice tannin marks on nearby surfaces or streaks where oak meets stone or brick. These are harmless and usually fade, or can be cleaned if needed.

All of this is expected and simply reflects the living nature of the material.
