Our Balau boards range in colour from light through to dark brown. When the different shades are fitted together, an impressive and contemporary look, that is particularly striking in the wet, is achieved. Grading guidelines allow for Balau to contain microscopic holes known as pinworm – these are in no way detrimental to the structure of the timber.

Balau is an extremely dense and durable hardwood. Naturally resistant to insect and fungal attack.

Our Balau boards tend to range from light through to dark brown. When the different shades are fitted together, an impressive and contemporary look that is particularly striking in the wet is achieved.

Grading guidelines allow for Balau to contain microscopic holes known as pinworm – these are in no way detrimental to the structure of the timber.

Whilst Balau is an extremely stable hardwood, we recommend that you leave a minimum 4mm gap between each board (5-6mm for 145mm wide boards). Being a natural product there will be some expansion and shrinkage in certain climates, but this is not likely to be noticed by the human eye.

Please note that as hardwood specialists, we do not stock softwood for sub-frames. We recommend that you source this from a standard timber merchant.

Balau can be fitted using stainless steel deck screws (always pre-drill hardwoods) and using hidden fixing systems *boards edge grooved to accept hidden fixings*

We recommend sealing the cut ends of your boards with an end grain sealer (beeswax works beautifully).

Decking oil: The most common finish for any hardwood deck. This product contains UV filters to delay the silvering process that strong sunlight causes in any hardwood.

Face Screwing: The traditional method. Simply screw through the face of the board into your sub-frame, plugging the hole if required. We recommend 400mm centre to centre joist spacing.

Deckwise Hidden Fastenings: allow you to lay your hardwood decking boards without the need for unsightly face screws. Each Deckwise clip screws into your sub-frame and then slots into the side of adjoining boards. Deckwise Clips automatically provide the 4mm spacing.

We can pre-groove your decking boards for use with Deckwise or you have the option of using a biscuit jointer on site.

We recommend installing your decking boards with the hardwood decking wrench. This is a self-locking deck board straightening tool that can be used to hold bent boards straight whilst fasteners are installed.

We also offer a hire service.

Simply screw through the face of the board into your sub-frame. Always Pilot Drill before fitting screws and drill 2mm oversize holes to allow for some expansion.
We recommend 4mm gaps between the boards (for tropical hardwoods) and 6mm gaps between the oak and softwood decking boards.
We recommend 400mm centre to centre joist spacing. Each hole can be plugged. We do not recommend that Hidden Fastening systems are used with oak decking.
