The Conversion Process
Water butts are extremely environmentally friendly. Rainwater is ideal for use in any garden; it’s not subject to a hose-pipe ban, it’s free, natural and organic. We supply a beech tap and cut the hole it fits into near the base of the barrel. We will also drill an 100mm hole in the top to take a standard downpipe, (other sizes on request).
Further Information
Oak Barrels made from local oak have been used in France for centuries to store and age wine, given the oak and vanilla overtones they impart. The barrels we convert into water butts are sourced from a selection of high end vineyards, including one operated by Remy Martin, where they are only used for one season before being decommissioned and imported to the UK. Our oak water butts have a capacity of 225 litres, (just under 50 imperial gallons), and were produced using high grade Oak from the surrounding regions. Only 5% of an Oak tree is deemed of good enough quality to produce wine barrels. Their light look makes them perfect for sitting on a decking area. Finishes/colours may vary slightly as these are produced from natural materials. In order to fit larger watering cans underneath the tap, these barrels can be sat on a sleeper cut into four, (please contact for further details).
Oak can darken and silver through time and the effects of weathering. This process will, however, take a while and can be prevented/delayed through regular pressure washing. Alternatively, a protective oil/sealant can be applied to the barrels. Please note: Barrels are stock outside, so may arrive more weathered then pictured.
Finishing Touches & Colour
Because our barrels are sourced from a number of high end vineyards, they feature a variety of finishing touches. All are based around a core design that include standard, hand curved staves and metal bands, but finishing specifications do differ. These include willow bands to top and bottom, supporting braces to both faces and vineyard specific markings. Some are daubed with red paint around the bilge to indicate the colour of wine their batch contains. All barrels start out light in colour, but as with any timber product, will silver over time. The colour of your barrel will depend on how long it has been in our stock. Barrels can be restored through pressure washing, sanding and/or the use of oxalic acid if required. A coat of Danish Oil can delay the weathering process.
